In Or Near the Takoma Park Area

Unfortunately we have lost a couple of our favorite wifi-watering
holes when "The Savory" in Takoma Park and Mayorga in Silver Spring
closed down a couple of months ago. But there are still a few
options to satisfy your surfing appetites.
If you are looking for a cool
"hot-spot" to get your work done or for casual surfing the net in
the Takoma/Silver Spring area - here are a few ideas.
The Olive
Lounge offers free wi-fi to customers. It is located in the rear of
the Middle Eastern Cuisine 7006 carroll ave. Takoma park, md.
301-270-5154. The lounge opens at 4:30 PM. seven days a
week.Internet is available in the rest. as well but connectivity is
not guaranteed.
The Montgomery College in Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus - see map

Montgomery College provides free
wireless access (MC WiFi) to the Internet at all three of the
campuses and the central administration building on the corner
of Hungerford Drive and Mannakee Street in Rockville. MC WiFi
zones are available in all of the libraries and various public
gathering places at the campuses. MC WiFi zones are currently
available for use.MC WiFi zones provide Internet connectivity to
wireless devices that are 802.11 a, b and g compatible. Users
are able to access the Internet and through the Internet access
college Web-enabled applications, such as MyMC, e-mail and Web
Voyage

Public Access Computers
Hours: Monday - Friday, 12 - 8 p.m. • Saturday, 12 - 6 p.m. •
Sunday 2 - 6 p.m. In the Computer Learning Center, there are two
rooms with 10 workstations each — with Internet,
word-processing, graphics and other software. One room is for
users who need absolute quiet for online exams, writing resumes,
and the like. Gentle conversation, cell phones, and two-person
work groups are permitted in the other room where staff
assistance is also available. A valid Takoma Park library card
is necessary. Four additional stations are located in the
library for those doing reference work, and another four can be
accessed in the senior room by people 50 and older. In all rooms
you can print files or save them to USB drive, floppy or CD.

Silver Spring
Wireless Internet Service
(SS Wi-Fi) Setup Guide
Silver Spring Wireless Fidelity (SS Wi-Fi) has been
developed to offer free wireless Internet access to any
citizen willing and able to light up a laptop equipped
with an IEEE 802.11b or 11g wireless adapter. Wireless
equipped laptops will be able to detect and connect to
the Internet via active Hotspot access points in the
Downtown Silver Spring area. The expected usage range
from an access point is 300 feet in the urban area. The
Silver Spring Wireless Fidelity (SS Wi-Fi) demonstration
is a public/private effort between Montgomery County
Government (MCG) and Atlantech Online Inc. (AOI). The
Montgomery County Government has deployed the wireless
network services. Atlantech Online Inc. has provided the
Internet Service Provider (ISP) facilities.
Webpage-based information will be made available over
the wireless net as well as within the MCG and Atlantech
Online (AOI) home pages.
Wireless
Internet access will be available FREE 24 hours a day,
seven (7) days a week. There will be no preauthorization
(or approval) requirements, and no guarantee of
performance, privacy, or reliability. There is an
acceptable use policy statement and acceptance of these
terms will be required prior to using the connection for
Internet activity. Users will be advised of standard
Internet User Policy. The free service has no Help
Desk or customer service support and is being offered on
a voluntary basis. The lack of privacy and reliability
must be noted.
The Silver Spring Wi-Fi Welcome page will greet users as
they acquire connection and Internet access. The Welcome
page summarizes services available and offers Hot link
keys to the SS Wi-Fi
Internet User Policy,
Setup Guide,
FAQ’s,
and Downtown
Silver Spring web pages. There will be linkage
opportunity to
Atlantech Online Inc, and
Montgomery
County Government home pages.
Figure 1 illustrates the targeted region of coverage
in Downtown Silver Spring. The network is designed to
operate at street level along the roads and streets
within the SS Wi-Fi service area.
